The afternoons in the slanted alleys of Fengtang always have an air of laid-back artistry. The colorful Portuguese-style buildings cast dappled shadows under the shade of the trees. I casually walked into a dessert shop named “Art Gallery”. The shop was playing French chanson music, and the air was filled with the sweet aroma of baking.
I ordered a piece of macau-style bread pudding and a cup of Macau Golden Beer. The bread pudding is a traditional Italian dessert from Macau. When the waiter brought it, the surface of the pudding was covered with fine Mary’s biscuit crumbs, like the first snowfall of the early winter. When I scooped it with a spoon, there was a thick layer of creamy mousse beneath, which melted in my mouth. The contrast between the slightly crispy biscuit crumbs and the smooth cream was wonderful. The sweetness was well controlled, so it didn’t make me feel腻 (sour or unpleasant).
The color of Macau Golden Beer is deep, with a rich malt aroma and a faint caramel flavor. It is smooth in the mouth and has a long-lasting aftertaste.
The table next to us was occupied by a young couple. The girl was telling the boy about the story of the paintings on the wall. The boy nodded from time to time, his eyes gentle. Outside, an orange cat was lazily lying on the railing, basking in the sun.
It wasn’t until the last rays of the setting sun spilled through the colored glass window onto the table that I realized time had passed. When I got up to pay the bill, the owner smiled and handed me a business card. On the back was a line of words: “Since 1996, we have been dedicated to making every sweet with care.”
